Mini, midi or maxi: choosing a dress length
3 min read
The lengths
A mini ends above the knee. A midi ends anywhere between the knee and the lower calf. A maxi reaches the ankle or the floor. The same dress will sit differently on different heights, so always check the listed length in centimetres.
Measure before you buy
Hold a tape at the top of your shoulder and let it drop; note where the listed dress length ends on your leg. Product photos are usually shot on tall models, so a midi on the model may be nearly a maxi on you.
Footwear
Minis work with flats, sneakers and boots. Midis look balanced with a little height: block heels, wedges or pointed flats. Maxis should clear the floor by a centimetre or two in the shoes you intend to wear, or you will be stepping on the hem.
Comfort and occasion
For commuting and long days, a midi with a side slit or flare is the easiest to move in. Maxis suit holidays and evening events. For the office, most people find knee length or longer the most comfortable choice.
