How to care for oxidised and gold-plated jewellery
3 min read
Why it changes colour
Fashion jewellery is usually brass or alloy with a thin plated or oxidised finish. Moisture, sweat, perfume and air slowly react with the metal, so plating wears thin and the piece darkens or turns greenish. This is normal, but you can slow it a great deal.
Last on, first off
Put jewellery on after perfume, hairspray, sunscreen and make-up have dried. Take it off before washing hands, bathing, swimming or exercise. This single habit makes the biggest difference.
Cleaning
After wearing, wipe each piece with a soft dry cloth to remove sweat and oils. Do not use liquid silver cleaners or toothpaste on plated or oxidised pieces; they strip the finish. Oxidised jewellery is meant to be dark, so do not try to polish it bright.
Storing
Keep each piece in its own small zip pouch with the air pressed out, away from the bathroom. Adding a silica gel sachet helps in humid weather. Store necklaces flat or hanging so they do not tangle.
