How to wash printed cotton so the colours last
3 min read
The first wash matters most
Hand-printed and dark cottons often release extra dye in the first two or three washes. Wash each new piece alone in cold water. Soaking it for fifteen minutes in cold water with a spoon of salt before the first wash is a common way to reduce bleeding.
Washing
Use a mild liquid detergent and cold water. Turn the garment inside out so the printed surface rubs less. Do not soak coloured cotton for hours and do not scrub the print. In a machine, use the gentle cycle and a mesh laundry bag.
Drying
Dry in shade, inside out. Direct sun fades natural and vegetable dyes quickly, and you will see it first on the shoulders. Shake the garment out and smooth the seams by hand before hanging; it saves ironing later.
Ironing and storing
Iron on the reverse while the fabric is slightly damp, on a cotton setting. Store printed cottons folded in a dry cupboard. Keep light and dark pieces apart for the first few months, since some colours can transfer in humid weather.
